The function and structural characteristics of bearing cage

Rolling bearings are available with and without cages. Large bearings are generally required to bear large loads, often without cages, but filled with rolling elements between the inner and outer raceways; most small and medium-sized rolling bearings are equipped with cages, and the main functions of the bearing cage are:

1. The bearing cage separates the rolling elements at equal distances and is evenly distributed on the circumference of the raceway to prevent the rolling elements from colliding and rubbing against each other during operation;

2. Guide and drive the rolling body to roll on the correct raceway;

3. In a separable bearing, the rolling elements and a ring are combined to prevent the rolling elements from falling off.

Bearing cages have various structural types and complex shapes. Many equidistant pockets on the bearing cage, sometimes called windows for rolling bearings, are used to isolate and guide the rolling elements. The pockets have spherical, circular, oval, rectangular and toothed shapes, and their size is larger than the rolling element size. The difference between the two is the pocket clearance. The pocket clearance makes the bearing cage have a certain amount of movement in the radial and axial directions. The total movement in the radial direction is called the cage clearance. The connecting part between the roller cage windows is called the lintel, which acts to connect and increase the strength of the bearing cage.
