Bearings are the foundation of the mechanical industry as they are one of the most important aspects of machinery. Bearings used in industrial machinery help facilitate the relative rotation of an element, thereby minimizing friction between the two objects. Ultimately, ease of movement increases machine performance and efficiency.
1. What are the different mechanical bearing types and their uses?
Bearings can be divided into four categories; cylindrical bearings, ball bearings, tapered bearings and needle bearings. Each type has its advantages and disadvantages, which is why you may want to compare these bearings to determine which one is right for your needs. The four most common different types on the market are as follows.
1. mechanical bearing types of ball bearings
Ball bearings are the most popular type of bearing. Ball bearings consist of two raceways separated by small metal balls and are designed to handle very heavy loads. The purpose of ball bearings is to reduce friction caused by radial loads. This is accomplished by having two raceways hold the balls together and distribute the load through the rollers.
2. mechanical bearing types of cylindrical roller bearings
This type of bearing contains cylindrical rollers. Cylindrical geometry allows high-speed applications. Cylindrical bearings can withstand large radial loads and high speeds. Additionally, these bearings tend to be more durable. However, it is important to note that cylindrical rollers without cages cannot support speeds as high as cages.
3. mechanical bearing types of tapered roller bearings
Tapered roller bearings are characterized by two rings, an outer ring and an inner ring, and several tapered rollers. These rings have tapered features that make them resemble conical segments. Due to their shape, they provide a large contact surface area, allowing them to carry heavy loads. These types of bearings are mainly used for the steering of machine spindles, vehicle transmissions or car wheels.
4. mechanical bearing types of needle roller bearings
Needle roller bearings are generally thinner than traditional roller bearings. They are ideal for handling heavy radial loads and high speeds. They feature a drawn cup shape that can withstand large loads while offering a slim cross-section. Needle roller bearings are mainly used in components such as rocker arm pivots, pumps and transmissions in automobiles.
2. How to choose bearings for industrial machinery
When deciding which bearing to choose, you need to consider several factors.
1. Types of loads that bearings can bear
First, you need to consider the type of load the bearing can handle. Generally, bearings can support two types of loads:
(1) Axial load: This is the load type parallel to the axis
(2) Radial load: This type of load is usually perpendicular to the axis
Each of these bearings carries a specific type of load. In some cases, you may find that a bearing can handle two loads at the same time (combined load). In this case, tapered roller bearings may be most suitable. However, if you want a bearing that can handle high radial loads, you are better off choosing cylindrical roller bearings. For lighter loads, ball bearings may be the most economical choice.
2. Bearing speed
The most important factor to consider is the bearing speed. Some bearings are suitable for higher speeds, while others allow lower speeds. Typically, cylindrical and needle bearings are ideal for high speed operation because they have a cage surrounding them.
Bearing misalignment may also be a factor in determining the type of bearing you choose. It is best to choose bearings that have a self-aligning feature so that any misalignment caused by installation errors or any mechanical failure is automatically repaired.
